Josh Hibberd
Seascape artist from the Isle of Wight using both driftwood and canvas to create unique coastal paintings.
Having grown up on the beautiful and ever changing coastlines of the Isle of Wight, it was only natural that these surroundings would become the inspiration for my artwork.
I work from a small studio in the heart of Freshwater Bay and am never far from the sea. I forage for driftwood mostly during the Autumn/Winter seasons when the island gets hit with stormy seas and rolling waves. These conditions bring the weathered driftwood onto the shores - each piece unique and with it’s own story to tell.
You can currently find some of my work up in Seaview Gallery and The Albion Hotel in Freshwater Bay.
Canvas paintings
This collection of paintings captures surfers out far from shore in the deep blues of the ocean. I let the paints free flowing movement shape the motion of the sea, simply working off what I was feeling at the time of painting. Each canvas has a real sense of depth with the thick white layers capturing the constant movement and swell of the waves.
Driftwood.
‘The canvas I never thought to use before.’
During the Autumn/Winter months, my local beaches are littered with debris that stormy seas force up onto the shore. Unfortunately most of this debris is plastic waste, but when I spotted large amounts of driftwood washing up a few years ago, I really wanted to try and repurpose it. Each piece of driftwood and provides a unique textured canvas for my artwork.
My home.
I’m so grateful to have grown up on the Isle of Wight. My studio situated in the heart of Freshwater Bay and is a five minute from the local beach. The island’s beautiful coastline not only offers an endless source of inspiration for my artwork, but also provides a playground for surfing, paddle boarding and wakeboarding. There’s no better place to live.
Coast Magazine.
Very thankful for Coast mag getting in touch and writing a feature on my work and my life here on the Isle of Wight. The feature showed how the Island inspires my seascape paintings and the love I have for the Island I call home.
